While Some May, Others May Not
Zechariah 7:11
Your ancestors refused to listen to this message. They stubbornly turned away and put their fingers in their ears to keep from hearing.
Karlee was relieved to be back home. A last-minute decision had placed her in New York with her husband, Bill, who was in the city for a few days on business. She thought it would be fun, a change from the grind of law school, but instead of being exciting, she found the heat and humidity, the traffic and crowded streets and sidewalks enervating. While energy pulsed through its streets, New York remained an enigma; Karlee couldnât sense the soul of the city. Its residents moved through the streets too quickly and the tall buildings made her dizzy and unsettled.
Bill had no spare time. He had warned her that he would be working long hours, but Karlee thought he was exaggerating. He wasnât. She outlined the cases and reading assigned for the week and watched old movies.
When she and Bill landed, she stepped out of the plane and inhaled clean Midwest air. She considered kneeling down and kissing the ground but decided that Bill would wonder if she was suffering from law school derangement and suggest she drop out of school and choose another profession. When they arrived home from the airport, she changed her clothes and kissed him instead of the ground and drove to school.
Her Con Law class met on Thursday evenings. Despite the fact that she was always prepared, she felt nervous. She never knew when she would be asked a question on topics like the Equal Protection Clause, which seemed to be applied according to the whimsy of the Court. One case in particular had been especially puzzling: Railway Express Agency v. New York. She decided to do some research about the case in the library after class.
The stairwell in the library was silent as she climbed the empty staircase, noting the bare walls beside the stairs. No somber eyes of former law school presidents or deans assessed her progress, no flyers of upcoming events grabbed her attention. She didnât even observe an angel going up and down the wooden staircase offering her an invitation to another kingdom, one ruled by spiritual laws, not the ones made by politicians and upheld or struck down by the courts.
She quickly found the book she needed, although it had been shelved in the wrong place. Would this article about a statute written in New York City be as flat as the outlines of property she viewed in old deed books in the vault at her grandmotherâs court office? She wondered. Would this article be written in clear, clean, but unremarkable prose? Or would it provide a riot of figurative language or a dissonant Prokofiev symphony at variance with her senses? Would the article tingle her senses like the frigid ice water in the red Coke machine outside her grandmotherâs office? She used to shiver when she pushed her small hand and arm into the deep metal box to retrieve a miniature glass bottle of Coke.
